The Company: Nintendo

Nintendo first began with tradings cards and later started becoming a video game industry.

The Beginning

1889: Founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi, Marufuku Company, Ltd. began
1907: Marufuku introduces Western-styled playing cards
1933: Yamauchi forms Yamauchi Nintendo & Company, Ltd.
1951: The company is renamed Nintendo Playing Card Company
1959: Nintendo signs an agreement with Disney to market themed playing cards

1963: The firm's name is shortened to Nintendo Company, Ltd.

  • "While 1981's Donkey Kong and 1983's Mario Bros. are most people's introduction to Nintendo arcade games, the company's first coin-op video game machines actually date back to the late 1970's.

  • Between 1973 and 1978, Nintendo, which was only just beginning to move away from its trading cards and toys into the world of video games, released a range of arcade machines, most of them (with the exception of 1975's EVR Race and 1978's Test Driver) light gun shooters.

  • Computer Othello was the first video game developed by Nintendo R&D1. This internal studio, led by Game Boy creator Gunpei Yokoi, would soon be churning out titles like Donkey Kong, Mario Bros.,Duck Hunt, Kid Icarus and the Super Mario Land games. It was also the studio a young designer by the name of Shigeru Miyamoto would prove his worth before being given his own team, which would then go on to create games like the Super Mario series and The Legend Of Zelda."

The People Who Make it Happen

  • Married the daughter of Fusajiro, Tei Yamauchi, and took on the name Yamauchi and as the 2nd president of Nintendo

  • In 1933, he established a joint-ventured company and renamed it Yamauchi Nintendo & Company

  • In 1949, Sekiryo retired after suffering a stroke and died soon afterwards. He passed the business down to his grandson Hiroshi Yamauchi. It was not given to his son (father of Hiroshi) due to his absence and abandonment.

History of Donkey Kong

He wanted to create something entirely new, and he had some ideas up his sleeve before starting development.

  • "One was including a story. He had always wondered why video games had no plot and felt that there was an unexplored potential for engrossing stories. He looked at some of his favorite films as inspiration and desperately wanted to get the license for a Popeye game.

  • Nintendo was unable to get it, however, so Miyamoto resorted to creating his own. The characters included in his game would be highly similar to those from Popeye, and the relationship between them was clearly based off of the love triangle from the series. Olive would be replaced by Lady, later known as Pauline, Donkey Kong would take the place of Bluto, while the character Popeye would transform into gaming's biggest superstar: Mario, originally known as Jumpman.

  • Next, Miyamoto would have to create an idea for the game's plot. In the final version, Donkey Kong would escape his master's clutches, kidnap his girlfriend, and climb to the top of a series of girders at a construction site. Mario would naturally go off to save his girlfriend, though would be bombarded by a series of barrels that Donkey Kong sent down the girders. Mario, using his fantastic jumping powers, would hop over the barrels and use hammers to get rid of them as well. As Mario progressed through the game, new obstacles would stand in Mario's way. After reaching the very top, Mario would cause Donkey Kong's platform to tumble and subsequently save Pauline. Thus, gaming's first plot was created.

  • Donkey Kong is among the first titles to have multiple stages and featured some elaborate cutscenes in its time. Miyamoto composed the soundtrack and when everything was said and done, Yamauchi knew that what he had was a hit, so he sent it over to America. .

  • The word of the game got loose, Nintendo was forced to order thousands of more units from Japan, although the company couldn't keep up with demand.

  • Shigeru Miyamoto's first work as a game designer proved to be one of Nintendo's most successful ventures yet in almost one hundred years.

  •  In the new game he wanted the playable character to be Donkey Kong to sort of balance the relationship between Mario and him, though because of his size he resorted to creating a smaller ape called Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong's son. In this new game, appropriately titled Donkey Kong Jr., DK's son would climb on various vines in order to save his father who was placed in a caged prison by Mario. He eventually managed to do so, and afterwards Donkey Kong kicked Mario away. Miyamoto was once again the person most involved with the game, and later went to work on Donkey Kong 3.

  •  After the series' success, Miyamoto focused more on Mario, thus creating an arcade game.

  •  Nintendo released Donkey Kong in 1981 when arcades were new and popular. Gas stations, fast food places and other resturants were sure to have one of the many one-quarter arcades that had been produced. Players controlled a construction worker (or carpenter) known as Jumpman who tried to get back his girlfriend Pauline from a huge gorilla known as Donkey Kong (which means "Stubborn Gorilla" ) by jumping over several obstacles and climbing up ladders.

  • The single-screen game was a big hit and in 1982 Donkey Kong Jr was released.

  • Mario (formally Jumpman) had trapped and caged the barrel-rolling babboon and it was up to DK Jr to save his dad. Instead of more barrel-jumping action, the game consisted of climbing vines and dropping barrels

  •  In 1983, Nintendo released Donkey Kong 3, in which Stanley the Bugman (who was armed with unlimited bug-repellant), tried to keep the bugs from taking his flowers, while making sure the Giant Monkey didn't come down from the vines.

  •  When the Donkey Kong coin-op game was first released in 1981, it was a phenomenal success, selling over 65,000 units. Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3 brought the series' total sales to over 100,000 units. Compare the fact that the ultra hot Street Fighter II series sold nearly 50,000, and you can see how big of success Donkey Kong really was."

Do you think we should have the barrel links at BOTH the top and bottom of the page? If we want to make a link that will return to the top of the page, we could use the blast barrel.

Sure! I can add another one. I didn't put homepage on one of the barrels cause we have to create it and PhotoShop it and such.

Okay so idk what happened, but the page went bizarre so I had to delete some stuff to fix it but no worries. I'll put it all back on.

Thanks for the cite reminder! I hope you don't mind, I added some info on the Game and Watch system, you can do what you want with it, or delete it, I was just dealing with the universal vs Nintendo lawsuit info and noticed that it wasn't on our wiki. its not a real major system, but it is a predecessor to the Game Boy and the DS. So whatever you think : )

yes, our internet has been in and out since Tuesday. While its working I have been ordering my notes and links so that I can get to campus as early in the morning as i can tomorrow and will be there until I get all of my information in, or I have to get my son in bed. and the same for Tuesday. I have all of my info in order now, so it should be just a matter of re typing things in.

Okay. I added more stuff to it. I'll add the list of games as well.

Are you doing a timeline of the games??... use this site: mariowiki donkey kong series. It lists most of them on there. Also, don't forget to post your other information. Don't worry about the timeline of games if you haven't finished your other stuff yet!

hey guys, we are gonna need to chat before presentation time. One of the youtubes and some of your stuff is all of impact... :/

Okay so during the presentation, I'll leave you to presenting that stuff. Uhmmm I'm just gonna fix it so it fills the entire page and not just the left hand side

Liz I hope you have your info down because you're going to either have to quickly talk about the games or you're going to have to put a description of the game down. You can't leave it blank with no info and just pictures! Also because some of the info you put down correlates to Alisha's info on the impact page, just announce it but say you'll learn more on the impact page. Something like that so we don't have to talk about it twice.

Yes of course. I was under the impression that we were getting together a few minutes before class to go over which things would go with impact. I had planned to put in a short description, or link them to their corresponding wikis. Also, I was not planning on talking about all of the games, that is what I noticed took the longest in all the other presentations, and John said the majority of the time should be spent on the Survey, so I was just going to touch in the most important ones in the presentation. I am sorry if I have upset you, I didn't realize it was you that was adjusting things, I had assumed that it was my computer doing what it has all week.
